SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Battle of Britain 85th Anniversary Model Project - With Dom Pound
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum for our Friday morning talk\, where model maker and Battle of Britain enthusiast Dom Pound will be talking to us about the Battle of Britain 85th Anniversary Model Project he has spearheaded across a number of Battle of Britain linked sites across the South East (including Bentley Priory Museum).   \nThe models will help Bentley Priory Museum to share the story of Lock and Neil’s meeting in the sky during the summer of 1940. \nDom has been fascinated by the Battle of Britain since he was a child and describes it as a “life-long passion”. \nHe explains: “At the age of five I attended my first Battle of Britain reunion at RAF Kenley\, back when there were still numerous veterans to still tell the story… by my late teens the numbers of the ‘Few’ had reduced drastically\, but my appreciation for that vital summer of 1940 has grown and I am now dedicated to preserving the memory of the Few however I can. \n“Encouraged by watching my father make kits for me as a small child\, I began building my own at the age of 12. As the years passed\, I took my skills to a new level\, spending many hours making my models as realistic as possible and adding every ounce of spare detail I could. In late 2021\, having used social media to share my builds\, I received my first commissions\, a catalyst for what is now a small\, part-time business. \n“I am now using my skills to create displays for key Battle of Britain sites in time for the 85th anniversary in 2025. I aim to create displays that are interactive and informative but that also inspire commemoration and tell stories. In total I will be creating 17 models that will be displayed at seven sites. \n“I dedicate this project to the memory of the ‘Few’ and the memory of the Battle of Britain 1940.” \nFurther updates on this project can be found on our webpage here: \nhttps://bpm.takeoff-dev.co.uk/battle-of-britain-85th-anniversary-model-project/ \nThe talk will take place in the Museum’s Learning Centre and entry is included with Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your place via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Intelligence\, Events and Organisations - With Ron Koorm
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum for our Friday morning talk\, where following last year’s fantastic talk on Intelligence People and Places\, Ron Koorm will return to talk about some of the Intelligence Events and Organisations during the the 2nd World War. \nRonald Koorm is an established author on military history\, codebreaking and intelligence\, currently finalising a WW2 Codebreaking Glossary in three volumes\, covering worldwide people\, places\, events\, organisations\, deception\, equipment\, and systems. The Talk will focus on certain selected\, specific Events and Organisations which had an impact on the outcome of the war. From the largest engineering factory in Europe during WW2\, to how Allied codebreaking machines were designed and built. The contribution of women in wartime and their achievement across different parts of the world. \nWe have to acknowledge that while the UK was established in intelligence gathering and processing\, we also relied on many external organisations and people around the world to help defeat the enemy\, and provide invaluable support. With his extensive research the speaker located some relevant wartime photos which had never been seen before by the Museum archivist at GCHQ. Some of those will be published in volume two of the author’s glossary. \nThe talk will take place in the Museum’s Learning Centre and entry is included with Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your place via the link below. \nReserve Your Place \nImages courtesy of The National Cryptologic Museum\, USA ©

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Dad's Army Goes To War - With Melody Foreman
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday Morning Talk\, where Melody Foreman will be talking us through the real military service history of many of the cast in the much loved comedy sitcom Dad’s Army. \nFor decades the classic\, evergreen BBC comedy Dad’s Army has entertained millions of viewers around the world. But the farcical antics of Walmington-on-Sea’s bumbling Home Guard platoon camouflage the true military service of some of the actors themselves. Despite their light-hearted appearance\, many of the cast saw active service in one\, or even both\, of the world wars – and much of it far from humorous. \nAbout the speaker \nMELODY FOREMAN is a journalist with experience in newspapers and television documentaries. She also works as a book sommelier and public speaker. Melody is the author of the best-selling Bomber Girls\, A Spitfire Girl\, the biography of Air Transport Auxiliary pilot Mary Wilkins Ellis\, The Wreck Hunter: Battle of Britain and the Blitz\, and two books about the history of Kent. Melody is a regular contributor to national publications including Britain at War magazine. She maintains an avid interest in the social history of both the First and Second World Wars\, literature\, art\, film and theatre studies. www.melodyforeman.co.uk \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Operations Room gallery and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required \nThis talk was advertised as fully booked\, but we’re pleased to say that it will now be held in our Operations Room gallery and further bookings will be taken. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Phew! That Was Close - With Air Marshal GA 'Black' Robertson
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum for our Friday morning talk\, where Air Marshal (Retd) GA ‘Black’ Robertson will be returning to speak about some extraordinary individual’s experiences that are featured in his latest book ‘Flying Through the Ranks’. \nPopular speaker Air Marshal Black Robertson returns on Friday 8 November with another fascinating talk:  Phew – That Was Close! It’s based on his latest book\, Flying Through the Ranks\, where contributors from a Marshal of the RAF to a Junior Technician tell a series of extraordinary stories that run the gamut of risk-taking from the Cold War to the Balkans. \nTo give you a flavour of some eye-opening experiences\, you’ll hear of a Lightning first-tourist who succumbs to the ‘press-on spirit’. In the Falklands a calculated gamble puts tanker crews in grave danger\, while a brilliant\, almost equally risky piece of improvisation averts potential disaster for a young Hunter pilot. Then from Kosovo comes the tale of an astonishing helicopter escape. There are engineer stories too\, not least those from a UK base seemingly prone to serious accidents. Central to so many of these riveting tales is the bond between those who fly and those who support them on the ground – as is the most important factor of them all: sheer good fortune. Don’t miss this enthralling illustrated presentation. \nAbout the speaker \nAir Marshal GA ‘Black’ Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA RAF (Retd) \n‘Black’ Robertson joined the RAF in 1963\, instantly acquiring the nickname that’s remained with him ever since. After 3 years at the RAF College\, Cranwell\, he spent the next three decades in flying\, staff and command appointments including tours of duty in the USA\, Germany and the Falkands. He flew all the RAF’s front line fighter aircraft and also qualified as a helicopter pilot. A trustee of the David Vaisey Awards\, a Cranfield Trust mentor and an ambassador for the National Spitfire Monument\, www.nationalspitfireproject\, he now devotes his time mainly to lecturing and writing and has appeared at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and the Gloucester History Festival. Flying Through the Ranks is his fourth book; for more information\, see www.blackrobertson.com. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIt will take place in the Museum’s Learning Centre for those with Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your place via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: BRIXMIS - With Aldon Ferguson
DESCRIPTION:Join us a for our Friday morning talk\, where the ever popular historian Aldon Ferguson will be returning to talk about the Cold War covert reconnaissance mission\, BRIXMIS. \nThe British Commanders’ in Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany was essentially a license to spy.  Formed in 1946 by the Robertson – Malinin Agreement it permitted selected UK military groups to wander in Soviet occupied East Germany to monitor their troop movements and activities.  This right was fully exploited until the end of the Cold War and removal of Soviet forces from East Germany in 1991.  This is that story. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:FULLY BOOKED -Friday Morning Talks: Eyes over D-Day - With Mark Lemon
DESCRIPTION:This talk is now fully booked. Please contact us enquiries@bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk or call on 020 8950 5526 if you would like to be added to the waiting list in the event of any drop outs. \nJoin us for our Friday morning talk\, where Mark Lemon will be returning to to talk about his Father in-law’s wartime work as a reconnaissance pilot.  \nEyes over D Day. The very personal journey of a reconnaissance pilot in the 2nd Tactical Airforce. \nF/Lt ‘Joe’ Boughey was involved every step of the way in the D Day Operations. A trained bomber pilot\, he was involved in early testing of secret “Rebecca” transponder technology that minimised allied casualties during close tactical air support. Very unusually\, he transferred from bombers to the single engine Mustang supporting excercises on Slapton Sands\, photographing German beach defences\, and probing our own decoys as part of Operation Fortitude. He was one of the first pilots to see D Day unfold\, and at dawn was acting as a spotter for HMS Belfast’s opening salvos against the German heavy defences. He gave close tactical reconnaissance support to Canadian and Polish troops as they advanced through Normandy\, playing a key role in the Battle of Falaise and in securing navel access to Antwerp passed Walcheren Island. The talk also shines an unexpected light on the likely true cause of failure of Operation Market Garden. \nThe painting above is one he had commissioned by Mark Posselthwaite showing Joe and his no2 flying over Ouistreham at dawn guiding HMS Belfast’s guns. \nAbout the speaker \nMark Lemon is a keen military historian\, and a volunteer at Bentley Priory. He has spent several years researching his father in law’s role in the RAF after his log books were stolen. This is his second talk at the museum\, having previously given another highly personal history\, that of his mother who was ‘the barmaid who built spitfires’. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership.

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: D-Day (Uxbridge Bunker) -With Dilip Amin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Dilip Amin’s talk will help us mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. \nDilip Amin is a military historian\, public speaker\, and published author. His previous talk on his book ‘Enemy Sighted’ was widely praised. Hear him now bring the remarkable story of how control of the air was fought for and won in the build up to\, and beyond D-Day eighty years ago. \nPivotal to the telling of this story is the 11 Group Operations Room\, from where aircraft had been controlled to protect troops at Dunkirk … directed to save Britain from Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain … and were now coordinated to help the Allies gain a foothold on the beaches of Normandy. \n  \n \nAbout the speaker: \nDILIP AMIN is a retired police chief superintendent\, with a life-long interest in military history\, military aviation\, and the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. He volunteers as a tour guide at the Battle of Britain Bunker and relishes the opportunity to share its rich and fascinating story with visitors\, bringing its history to life as a tribute to those who served there during the dark days of war. He now puts the investigative and presentational experience gained whilst in the police to good use\, devoting much of his time to researching and writing about his field of passion. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: London's Industrial Past - With Mark Amies
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Mark Amies returns by popular demand to talk about London’s Industrial Past.  \nLondon was once a hive of manufacturing industry producing an enormous variety of products from biscuits to fighter aircraft. Sadly since the 1960s so much of that industry has disappeared\, with much of it leaving the UK altogether. Referencing his book of the same name\, the author\, Mark Amies will talk about the familiar names\, many still with us today\, whose goods were once made in the capital. The presentation will include a varied selection of images that should be of great interest. \nAs a special for the talk\, he will mention a few factories that were in the local area\, not mentioned in the book. \nMark may be familiar to some who came along to his talk about aircraft manufacturing in North West London\, last summer. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:FULLY BOOKED -Friday Morning Talks: WW2 Codebreaking and Intelligence - People and Places - with Ron Koorm
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this talk is now fully booked. If you would like to be put onto a waiting list for any potential places\, please contact enquiries@bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk  \nJoin us for our Friday morning talk\, where Ron Koorm will talking to us about some of the key people and places involved globally during the 2nd World War.  \nRon was commissioned to write a glossary on WW2 codebreaking in three parts\, the first for release in summer 2024 is subtitled ‘People and Places’. This is not just about what happened in the UK\, but also across Europe\, and the world at the time. It aims to give a better understanding and balance to the reader and researcher of what really happened in the build-up to the war\, the war itself\, and some post-war developments. Some of the research on People and Places impacting on gathering intelligence from the enemy and trying to break the enemy ciphers will be discussed in this talk. \nAlthough there will be famous people and places included\, others will be much less known to the public. Thus\, people who operated codebreaking machines at outstations\, engineers\, mathematicians\, military officers\, Y-station personnel\, politicians\, and others all played a part\, and many of them were outside the UK. Some were inventors and innovators\, either of machines or of systems and processes. A brief selection of people and of places will form part of this talk\, and may give those attend the inspiration to find out more\, in their own time. \nThe build-up to D-Day\, June 1944\, is an interesting period\, inasmuch intelligence gathering and decoding enemy messages became critically important to the allies. The activities and preparation proved largely to be successful\, but it was not all plain sailing. It could have so easily gone wrong\, so risk and reward had to be considered in detail\, and balanced. \nPart of the content of the talk will discuss some of the options that the Allies had at the time\, and also the enemy perspective of the allies\, too. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – Please note that this talk is now fully booked. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: 'Up close to the Nuclear Bang' - Brian Pearce and Brian Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Brian Pearce will talk us through Operation Grapple\, the first British tests of a thermonuclear weapon.   \nIn 1957 Brian Pearce was a midshipman and then a sub lieutenant serving on HMS Narvik. Narvik played a leading role in Operation Grapple\, the first British tests of a thermonuclear weapon\, on Malden Island in the South Pacific.  Although a seaman officer\, upon arrival at Malden Island\, Brian joined the team of meteorologists charged with tracking the possible and then actual direction of any fallout from the tests. \nOperation Grapple established Britain as a world nuclear power and earned it a seat on the Security Council of the United Nations. \nThis era of history has become clouded with intrigue as the powers involved in the nuclear weapons race have sought to re-frame the narrative of how the events unfolded. \nIn this talk Brian gives first-hand insights into the lead up to the tests\, the tests themselves and the aftermath of the tests\, immediate and long term. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Forgotten Air VC's of The Great War - With Jim Nicolson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Jim Nicolson will talk us through the stories of four of the lesser known flying Victoria Cross recipients during The Great War. \n628 Victoria Crosses were awarded during the great war\, but only nineteen went to airmen. Of these nineteen awards\, four were posthumous and all but one was awarded to officers. \nThey came from a wide range of backgrounds; some very wealthy some not\, but in the words of one senior air force officer they all had in one thing in common\, which was that they each had “the guts of a lion.” \nSome of these men are still quite well known by people with even a passing interest in the great war\, men like Leefe-Robinson\, Billy Bishop\, and Albert Ball. As for the others\, despite their amazing stories\, they have almost completely slipped from people’s memory. So in this talk\, Jim Nicolson will focus on just four of them\, including William Barker\, described as “the heroes’ hero” and the most decorated serviceman in Canadian military history. \n \nAbout the speaker: \nJim served for thirty years as a police officer; working for most of that time in Soho and London’s East End\, before moving to Hertfordshire from where he retired in 2002\, as the Assistant Chief Constable. He has been a keen student of military history for many years\, particularly focusing on aviation and the Great War. \n  \n  \nJim is the Nephew of James Brindley Eric Nicolson\, VC\, DFC\, the only Fighter Command recipient of the VC and the only one won during the Battle of Britain. Jim will be returning to talk about his Uncle later this year\, last given at Bentley Priory Museum in 2019. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Nine from One: The true story of 9 RAF pilots from 1 family in 106 years - With Anthony Inglis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where renowned Music Director Anthony Inglis Howard-Williams ARCM will talk about his family’s incredible RAF service. \nThis presentation\, given by an ambassador for the Royal Air Forces Association\, is the story of his own family sending nine members to war. Incredibly\, all survived. All except one served in the 2nd World War\, and two were in the RFC/RNAS. They number an Air Marshal who came up with the idea of the Dunkirk little ships and was CAS for the RNZAF\, to a Flight Lieutenant in 18 Sqn currently flying Chinooks out of Odiham. There was also an Air Commodore who was number 2 to Dowding at Bentley Priory when Keith Park was absent\, later becoming executive chairman of RAFA\, founding Airmail. A Battle of Britain pilot with Douglas Bader in 19 Sqn at Duxford from the start. An Air-Vice Marshal who after Pearl Harbour persuaded Roosevelt against the advice of his own service chiefs\, that Churchill’s request for the “Germany First” policy was agreed\, ensuring the success of the Arcadia Conference. A Flt Lt who joined the RAF at the age of 66. A Group Captain who is credited with the joint highest number of pathfinder operations in WW2 and a Sqn Ldr who flew a ME410 in 1944 out of Farnborough. \n \nAbout the speaker: \nFor 25 years\, he was Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra and for 33 years from 1987 until 2020\, Music Director/Supervisor/Consultant of Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. Since 2017 he has been Music Director of the London Concert Orchestra and since 2004 Music Director for the Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins.  He is equally at home in the world of opera. \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: From SPITFIRES to VAMPIRES and BEYOND - With Air Marshal GA 'Black' Robertson CBE
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where AIR MARSHAL GA ‘BLACK’ ROBERTSON CBE BA FRAeS FRSA\, will join us to talk about the remarkable career of  New Zealand ace Owen Hardy\, the feature of his latest book. \nWorld War Two Spitfire pilot Owen Hardy was probably the last New Zealand ace to tell his story. He left home at 18 bent on joining the RAF and by 1942\, aged only 20\, he was at Biggin Hill with 72 Squadron under Brian Kingcome. D-Day found him flying over the Normandy beaches with 485 (New Zealand) Squadron. That he survived the war unharmed owed as much to luck as it did to his ability as a fighter pilot. Unable to settle in civilian life afterwards in New Zealand\, he returned to the RAF for the second phase of a remarkable career. \nConverting to jets\, Hardy went on to command 71 Squadron\, leading a Vampire aerobatic team with considerable success across Europe – dodging MiGs at the same time! But adapting to peacetime service wasn’t easy. Previously stimulated by the wartime environment and still passionate about flying\, he was less enamoured with staff jobs\, and this despite working on the introduction of a new\, state-of-the-art missile system\, Bloodhound. Then a fateful decision\, to turn down a Javelin squadron and follow his mentor\, led finally to disillusionment. \nIn telling Hardy’s story\, Black Robertson shines a light not just on what it was like to fly in combat\, but also on the changing face of a post-war RAF which arguably undervalued some of its heroes. From the heat of North Africa to the uncertainties of the Cold War\, it’s a unique and enthralling tale. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place
