DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Museum for our Friday morning talk\, where Jim Nicolson will be returning to speak about his Uncle\, James Nicolson VC. \nIn this presentation\, Jim Nicolson will talk about his similarly named uncle\, James Nicolson\, who was the only Fighter Command pilot in the whole of the Second World War to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Jim’s talk focuses on his uncle’s early war experiences; the action which resulted in the award of the Victoria Cross; the impact that the award had on him and his wife; his subsequent death in action in Burma near the end of the war; ending with the steps taken to remember his gallantry. \nAbout the speaker \nJim served for thirty years as a police officer; working for most of that time in Soho and London’s East End\, before moving to Hertfordshire from where he retired in 2002\, as the Assistant Chief Constable. \nHe has been a keen student of military history for many years\, particularly focusing on aviation and the Great War. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIt will take place in the Museum’s Learning Centre for those with Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your place via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

Please contact us enquiries@bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk or call on 020 8950 5526 if you would like to be added to the waiting list in the event of any drop outs. \nJoin us for our Friday morning talk\, where Mark Lemon will be returning to to talk about his Father in-law’s wartime work as a reconnaissance pilot.  \nEyes over D Day. The very personal journey of a reconnaissance pilot in the 2nd Tactical Airforce. \nF/Lt ‘Joe’ Boughey was involved every step of the way in the D Day Operations. A trained bomber pilot\, he was involved in early testing of secret “Rebecca” transponder technology that minimised allied casualties during close tactical air support. Very unusually\, he transferred from bombers to the single engine Mustang supporting excercises on Slapton Sands\, photographing German beach defences\, and probing our own decoys as part of Operation Fortitude. He was one of the first pilots to see D Day unfold\, and at dawn was acting as a spotter for HMS Belfast’s opening salvos against the German heavy defences. He gave close tactical reconnaissance support to Canadian and Polish troops as they advanced through Normandy\, playing a key role in the Battle of Falaise and in securing navel access to Antwerp passed Walcheren Island. The talk also shines an unexpected light on the likely true cause of failure of Operation Market Garden. \nThe painting above is one he had commissioned by Mark Posselthwaite showing Joe and his no2 flying over Ouistreham at dawn guiding HMS Belfast’s guns. \nAbout the speaker \nMark Lemon is a keen military historian\, and a volunteer at Bentley Priory. He has spent several years researching his father in law’s role in the RAF after his log books were stolen. This is his second talk at the museum\, having previously given another highly personal history\, that of his mother who was ‘the barmaid who built spitfires’. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where popular historian\, author and speaker Helen Doe will be talking about the RNLI’s fascinating 200 year history\, to tie in with our temporary exhibtion. \nOne Crew: The RNLI and 200 Years of Saving Lives at Sea \nThis charity began with a meeting in a London Tavern in March 1824.  Since then its volunteer crews have saved countless lives around the coasts of Britain and Ireland. A look at some of the incidents and the challenges faced by this vital service including  a bankrupt baronet\, the ingenious use of a loaf of bread and how a group of teenagers influenced a major new class of lifeboat. \nAbout Helen Doe \nHelen Doe is a historian\, author and speaker with a particular love of maritime subjects. It is people\, often the ordinary and\, sometimes unsung\, heroes and heroines that attract her attention. His previous talk on his book ‘Enemy Sighted’ was widely praised. Hear him now bring the remarkable story of how control of the air was fought for and won in the build up to\, and beyond D-Day eighty years ago. \nPivotal to the telling of this story is the 11 Group Operations Room\, from where aircraft had been controlled to protect troops at Dunkirk … directed to save Britain from Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain … and were now coordinated to help the Allies gain a foothold on the beaches of Normandy. \n  \n \nAbout the speaker: \nDILIP AMIN is a retired police chief superintendent\, with a life-long interest in military history\, military aviation\, and the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. He volunteers as a tour guide at the Battle of Britain Bunker and relishes the opportunity to share its rich and fascinating story with visitors\, bringing its history to life as a tribute to those who served there during the dark days of war. If you would like to be put onto a waiting list for any potential places\, please contact enquiries@bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk  \nJoin us for our Friday morning talk\, where Ron Koorm will talking to us about some of the key people and places involved globally during the 2nd World War.  \nRon was commissioned to write a glossary on WW2 codebreaking in three parts\, the first for release in summer 2024 is subtitled ‘People and Places’. This is not just about what happened in the UK\, but also across Europe\, and the world at the time. It aims to give a better understanding and balance to the reader and researcher of what really happened in the build-up to the war\, the war itself\, and some post-war developments. Some of the research on People and Places impacting on gathering intelligence from the enemy and trying to break the enemy ciphers will be discussed in this talk. \nAlthough there will be famous people and places included\, others will be much less known to the public. Thus\, people who operated codebreaking machines at outstations\, engineers\, mathematicians\, military officers\, Y-station personnel\, politicians\, and others all played a part\, and many of them were outside the UK. Some were inventors and innovators\, either of machines or of systems and processes. A brief selection of people and of places will form part of this talk\, and may give those attend the inspiration to find out more\, in their own time. \nThe build-up to D-Day\, June 1944\, is an interesting period\, inasmuch intelligence gathering and decoding enemy messages became critically important to the allies. The activities and preparation proved largely to be successful\, but it was not all plain sailing. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Brian Pearce will talk us through Operation Grapple\, the first British tests of a thermonuclear weapon.   \nIn 1957 Brian Pearce was a midshipman and then a sub lieutenant serving on HMS Narvik. Narvik played a leading role in Operation Grapple\, the first British tests of a thermonuclear weapon\, on Malden Island in the South Pacific.  Although a seaman officer\, upon arrival at Malden Island\, Brian joined the team of meteorologists charged with tracking the possible and then actual direction of any fallout from the tests. \nOperation Grapple established Britain as a world nuclear power and earned it a seat on the Security Council of the United Nations. \nThis era of history has become clouded with intrigue as the powers involved in the nuclear weapons race have sought to re-frame the narrative of how the events unfolded. \nIn this talk Brian gives first-hand insights into the lead up to the tests\, the tests themselves and the aftermath of the tests\, immediate and long term. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Jim Nicolson will talk us through the stories of four of the lesser known flying Victoria Cross recipients during The Great War. \n628 Victoria Crosses were awarded during the great war\, but only nineteen went to airmen. Of these nineteen awards\, four were posthumous and all but one was awarded to officers. \nThey came from a wide range of backgrounds; some very wealthy some not\, but in the words of one senior air force officer they all had in one thing in common\, which was that they each had “the guts of a lion.” \nSome of these men are still quite well known by people with even a passing interest in the great war\, men like Leefe-Robinson\, Billy Bishop\, and Albert Ball. As for the others\, despite their amazing stories\, they have almost completely slipped from people’s memory. So in this talk\, Jim Nicolson will focus on just four of them\, including William Barker\, described as “the heroes’ hero” and the most decorated serviceman in Canadian military history. \n \nAbout the speaker: \nJim served for thirty years as a police officer; working for most of that time in Soho and London’s East End\, before moving to Hertfordshire from where he retired in 2002\, as the Assistant Chief Constable. He has been a keen student of military history for many years\, particularly focusing on aviation and the Great War. \n  \n  \nJim is the Nephew of James Brindley Eric Nicolson\, VC\, DFC\, the only Fighter Command recipient of the VC and the only one won during the Battle of Britain. Incredibly\, all survived. All except one served in the 2nd World War\, and two were in the RFC/RNAS. They number an Air Marshal who came up with the idea of the Dunkirk little ships and was CAS for the RNZAF\, to a Flight Lieutenant in 18 Sqn currently flying Chinooks out of Odiham. There was also an Air Commodore who was number 2 to Dowding at Bentley Priory when Keith Park was absent\, later becoming executive chairman of RAFA\, founding Airmail. A Battle of Britain pilot with Douglas Bader in 19 Sqn at Duxford from the start. An Air-Vice Marshal who after Pearl Harbour persuaded Roosevelt against the advice of his own service chiefs\, that Churchill’s request for the “Germany First” policy was agreed\, ensuring the success of the Arcadia Conference. A Flt Lt who joined the RAF at the age of 66. A Group Captain who is credited with the joint highest number of pathfinder operations in WW2 and a Sqn Ldr who flew a ME410 in 1944 out of Farnborough. \n \nAbout the speaker: \nFor 25 years\, he was Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra and for 33 years from 1987 until 2020\, Music Director/Supervisor/Consultant of Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. Mark’s Mother ‘Peggy’ was one of those workers who helped to keep the vital production of Spitfires going at crucial point in the war. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where AIR MARSHAL GA ‘BLACK’ ROBERTSON CBE BA FRAeS FRSA\, will join us to talk about the remarkable career of  New Zealand ace Owen Hardy\, the feature of his latest book. \nWorld War Two Spitfire pilot Owen Hardy was probably the last New Zealand ace to tell his story. He left home at 18 bent on joining the RAF and by 1942\, aged only 20\, he was at Biggin Hill with 72 Squadron under Brian Kingcome. D-Day found him flying over the Normandy beaches with 485 (New Zealand) Squadron. That he survived the war unharmed owed as much to luck as it did to his ability as a fighter pilot. Unable to settle in civilian life afterwards in New Zealand\, he returned to the RAF for the second phase of a remarkable career. \nConverting to jets\, Hardy went on to command 71 Squadron\, leading a Vampire aerobatic team with considerable success across Europe – dodging MiGs at the same time! But adapting to peacetime service wasn’t easy. Previously stimulated by the wartime environment and still passionate about flying\, he was less enamoured with staff jobs\, and this despite working on the introduction of a new\, state-of-the-art missile system\, Bloodhound. Then a fateful decision\, to turn down a Javelin squadron and follow his mentor\, led finally to disillusionment. \nIn telling Hardy’s story\, Black Robertson shines a light not just on what it was like to fly in combat\, but also on the changing face of a post-war RAF which arguably undervalued some of its heroes. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where historian Mark Amies will be talking about the important early aviation history taking place locally\, which forms the basis of his book ‘Flying up the Edgware Road’.  \nFlying up the Edgware Road tells the story of how an area of what is now north-west London became a hub of the British aircraft industry in the very early years of the twentieth century. From the Edwardian suburb of Cricklewood out towards the semi-rural hamlets of Colindale and Kingsbury\, a collection of factories were established to produce some of the most important warplanes that served in the First World War. \nMark takes the reader through the early days of flying at Hendon\, introduces the owners and workers of once-mighty companies\, such as Airco\, Handley Page and de Havilland\, and chronicles the decline and reuse of the factories for a new post-war economy. It is a book that will appeal to those keen to know more about London’s industrial\, social and economic past\, as well as those with an interest in early aviation history. \nMark will use the contents of his book as the basis of what will be an enjoyable talk. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where RAF Museum Head of Collections and Research Dr Harry Raffal will be taking us through the use of airpower during the evacuation of Dunkirk\, Operation Dynamo. \nTaking place on the 83rd anniversary of the first day of the evacuation\, Harry will draw on the research presented in his book ‘Air Power and the evacuation of Dunkirk’\, to examine how the evacuation of Dunkirk has been immortalised in books\, prints and films\, narrated as a story of an outnumbered\, inexperienced RAF defeating the battle-hardened Luftwaffe and protecting the evacuation. This book revives the historiography by analysing the air operations during the evacuation. Harry draws from German and English sources\, many for the first time in the context of Operation DYNAMO\, to argue that both sides suffered a defeat over Dunkirk. . This work examines the resources and tactics of both sides during DYNAMO and challenges the traditional view that the Luftwaffe held the advantage. The success that the Luftwaffe achieved during DYNAMO\, including halting daylight evacuations on 1 June\, is evaluated and the supporting role of RAF Bomber and Coastal Command is explored in detail for the first time. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: The Jewish Chaplains of the Royal Air Force in the Second World War - With Dr Jonathan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk with Dr Jonathan Lewis\, who will be talking about the role of Jewish Chaplains in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. \nOf the 56 Jewish Chaplains who served in British Forces in the Second World War\, seven were in the Royal Air Force. Two served in Britain\, one in the Far East\, one in Europe and three in the Middle East. The Jewish Chaplaincy organised visitation to Jewish airmen serving on RAF stations around Britain. By 1945 synagogues had been established on five RAF stations. \nConcern about the state of religious welfare in the RAF led to the establishment in 1942 of courses which were known as courses of instruction and courses in religious training. Now known as moral leadership courses\, these courses continue for Jewish serving personnel to this day. National Service saw the creation of RAF station synagogues and the appointment of religious lay leaders. Rev. Malcolm Weisman served for many years in the RAF as the Jewish Chaplain to H.M. Forces. Another minister is currently in training within the RAF Chaplaincy Branch. \nDr Jonathan Lewis studied Law at Cambridge and practised as a Solicitor and a Judge. A member of Pinner United Synagogue\, he served for twelve years on the Board of Deputies of British Jews\, for six of them as a member of its Executive Committee. He is active in Jewish legal and historical circles\, and is married with two sons and three granddaughters. \nIn retirement Jonathan was awarded a PhD for his research on this topic by University College London. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, with those behind the creation our current temporary exhibition\, ‘Forgotten Force: Art and Memory’.  \nArtist and art conservator Zofia Wyszomirska-Noga will talk about her art response in the context of an oral history project and about processes she used. \nOlga Topol will talk about her experience of curating the exhibition and introduce the work of the Jozef Pilsudski Institute. \nForgotten Force was an oral history project by the Piłsudski Institute of London giving first-hand evidence of the past by audio and video recording stories of Polish women survivors of the Second World War who have been residing in the UK for the past seventy years. To help bring these stories to life the Institute invited a London based artist and art conservator\, Zofia Wyszomirska-Noga\, to interpret the assembled tales and translate them to image. \nEphemeral\, monochromatic\, charcoal drawings that define the distant memory of a dramatic journey. Marbled paper bursting with splashes of colour embedded in the background; droplets of the past reimagined through an artist’s compassionate eye. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Bombing Britain - With Chris Goss
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, with historian Chris Goss a who will be speaking about the Luftwaffe bombing campaign against mainland Britain. Chris has successfully published many books under Pen and Sword. \nWhen war was declared in September 1939\, most German bombers were unable to reach mainland Britain but could attack shipping in the North Sea.  There was also an unease about dropping bombs on the mainland in case it caused an escalation.  However\, following the invasion of France and the Low Countries on 10 May 1940\, all of Britain was now within bombing range and the first major attack took place on the night of 18 June 1940.  This was then followed by the Battle of Britain\, the Blitz\, the Baedeker Blitz of 1942 and the Baby Blitz of 1944.  The talk will show how the German’s bombing war escalated and commensurate with an improvement of RAF night defences. It then waned to such an extent that for the last year of the war\, German bombers were almost non-existent over the night skies of Britain. \nAfter a 32-year career in the RAF and three years working for a civilian company as its Head of Operations\, Chris Goss is now a full-time aviation author and military historian writing under Pen and Sword. He is the author of over 40 critically acclaimed books covering aspects of the 2nd World War air war over North- West Europe. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Aldon Ferguson will be telling the story of the little known\, but highly important ‘Operation Frugal’. \nOperation Frugal was the support of Prime Minister Churchill and his advisors when he met with Stalin in Moscow in October 1944.  It involved the delivery and collection of the diplomatic bags to and from Moscow by the Mosquitoes of 544 Squadron based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.  Flying over enemy territory these flights were fraught with danger from both the Luftwaffe and the Soviet Air Force when strange aircraft appeared in Soviet skies.  This is the story of how these flights took place and the problems they faced from mistrust and a total lack of co-operation from the Soviet authorities and how the photo reconnaissance trained pilots succeeded. \n \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place
