DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where historian Mark Amies will be talking about the important early aviation history taking place locally\, which forms the basis of his book ‘Flying up the Edgware Road’.  \nFlying up the Edgware Road tells the story of how an area of what is now north-west London became a hub of the British aircraft industry in the very early years of the twentieth century. From the Edwardian suburb of Cricklewood out towards the semi-rural hamlets of Colindale and Kingsbury\, a collection of factories were established to produce some of the most important warplanes that served in the First World War. \nMark takes the reader through the early days of flying at Hendon\, introduces the owners and workers of once-mighty companies\, such as Airco\, Handley Page and de Havilland\, and chronicles the decline and reuse of the factories for a new post-war economy. It is a book that will appeal to those keen to know more about London’s industrial\, social and economic past\, as well as those with an interest in early aviation history. \nMark will use the contents of his book as the basis of what will be an enjoyable talk. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where RAF Museum Head of Collections and Research Dr Harry Raffal will be taking us through the use of airpower during the evacuation of Dunkirk\, Operation Dynamo. \nTaking place on the 83rd anniversary of the first day of the evacuation\, Harry will draw on the research presented in his book ‘Air Power and the evacuation of Dunkirk’\, to examine how the evacuation of Dunkirk has been immortalised in books\, prints and films\, narrated as a story of an outnumbered\, inexperienced RAF defeating the battle-hardened Luftwaffe and protecting the evacuation. This book revives the historiography by analysing the air operations during the evacuation. Harry draws from German and English sources\, many for the first time in the context of Operation DYNAMO\, to argue that both sides suffered a defeat over Dunkirk. . This work examines the resources and tactics of both sides during DYNAMO and challenges the traditional view that the Luftwaffe held the advantage. The success that the Luftwaffe achieved during DYNAMO\, including halting daylight evacuations on 1 June\, is evaluated and the supporting role of RAF Bomber and Coastal Command is explored in detail for the first time. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: The Jewish Chaplains of the Royal Air Force in the Second World War - With Dr Jonathan Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk with Dr Jonathan Lewis\, who will be talking about the role of Jewish Chaplains in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. \nOf the 56 Jewish Chaplains who served in British Forces in the Second World War\, seven were in the Royal Air Force. Two served in Britain\, one in the Far East\, one in Europe and three in the Middle East. The Jewish Chaplaincy organised visitation to Jewish airmen serving on RAF stations around Britain. By 1945 synagogues had been established on five RAF stations. \nConcern about the state of religious welfare in the RAF led to the establishment in 1942 of courses which were known as courses of instruction and courses in religious training. Now known as moral leadership courses\, these courses continue for Jewish serving personnel to this day. National Service saw the creation of RAF station synagogues and the appointment of religious lay leaders. Rev. Malcolm Weisman served for many years in the RAF as the Jewish Chaplain to H.M. Forces. Another minister is currently in training within the RAF Chaplaincy Branch. \nDr Jonathan Lewis studied Law at Cambridge and practised as a Solicitor and a Judge. A member of Pinner United Synagogue\, he served for twelve years on the Board of Deputies of British Jews\, for six of them as a member of its Executive Committee. He is active in Jewish legal and historical circles\, and is married with two sons and three granddaughters. \nIn retirement Jonathan was awarded a PhD for his research on this topic by University College London. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, with those behind the creation our current temporary exhibition\, ‘Forgotten Force: Art and Memory’.  \nArtist and art conservator Zofia Wyszomirska-Noga will talk about her art response in the context of an oral history project and about processes she used. \nOlga Topol will talk about her experience of curating the exhibition and introduce the work of the Jozef Pilsudski Institute. \nForgotten Force was an oral history project by the Piłsudski Institute of London giving first-hand evidence of the past by audio and video recording stories of Polish women survivors of the Second World War who have been residing in the UK for the past seventy years. To help bring these stories to life the Institute invited a London based artist and art conservator\, Zofia Wyszomirska-Noga\, to interpret the assembled tales and translate them to image. \nEphemeral\, monochromatic\, charcoal drawings that define the distant memory of a dramatic journey. Marbled paper bursting with splashes of colour embedded in the background; droplets of the past reimagined through an artist’s compassionate eye. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: Bombing Britain - With Chris Goss
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, with historian Chris Goss a who will be speaking about the Luftwaffe bombing campaign against mainland Britain. Chris has successfully published many books under Pen and Sword. \nWhen war was declared in September 1939\, most German bombers were unable to reach mainland Britain but could attack shipping in the North Sea.  There was also an unease about dropping bombs on the mainland in case it caused an escalation.  However\, following the invasion of France and the Low Countries on 10 May 1940\, all of Britain was now within bombing range and the first major attack took place on the night of 18 June 1940.  This was then followed by the Battle of Britain\, the Blitz\, the Baedeker Blitz of 1942 and the Baby Blitz of 1944.  The talk will show how the German’s bombing war escalated and commensurate with an improvement of RAF night defences. It then waned to such an extent that for the last year of the war\, German bombers were almost non-existent over the night skies of Britain. \nAfter a 32-year career in the RAF and three years working for a civilian company as its Head of Operations\, Chris Goss is now a full-time aviation author and military historian writing under Pen and Sword. He is the author of over 40 critically acclaimed books covering aspects of the 2nd World War air war over North- West Europe. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where Aldon Ferguson will be telling the story of the little known\, but highly important ‘Operation Frugal’. \nOperation Frugal was the support of Prime Minister Churchill and his advisors when he met with Stalin in Moscow in October 1944.  It involved the delivery and collection of the diplomatic bags to and from Moscow by the Mosquitoes of 544 Squadron based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire.  Flying over enemy territory these flights were fraught with danger from both the Luftwaffe and the Soviet Air Force when strange aircraft appeared in Soviet skies.  This is the story of how these flights took place and the problems they faced from mistrust and a total lack of co-operation from the Soviet authorities and how the photo reconnaissance trained pilots succeeded. \n \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where we will be showing the Polish Air Force Memorial Committee’s 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Commemorative Film. \nChairman of the PAFMC Richard Kornicki\, returns following his well attended and successful talk in September on the Polish Air Force in the West. Richard\, Son of the late gen. bryg. Franciszek Kornicki who flew in the battle with the legendary Polish 303 Squadron\, will introduce the film and take questions afterwards. \nThe film was produced to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Covid prevented the annual Commemoration of the Polish Air Force in 2020\, so this filmed virtual Commemoration was produced in its stead and to stand as a permanent record. The film includes unique footage of the RAF Northolt Sector Control room\, fully staffed by re-enactors\, bringing back to life the operations of 15 Sept 1940. Please note this talk will start earlier than usual at 10:45\, to incorporate the 2 minute National Silence marking Remembrance Day at 11:00.   \nThe British Jewry Book of Honour was published 100 years ago and lists the names of approximately 50\,000 Jews who served in the British Forces during the First World War. Of that number\, more than 2000 Jews died fighting for Britain\, in the conflict. Compiled from names given to the Jewish Chaplains\, the most senior\, Rev Michael Adler sent the names to be published weekly in the Jewish Chronicle. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday Morning Talk\, when we will happily once again be joined by ‘Black’ to talk about the story behind his latest book\, ‘A Spitfire Named Connie’. \nAir Marshal ‘Black’ Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA RAF (Retd) \nA Spitfire Named Connie is an exciting\, rollercoaster of a story. ‘Robbie’ Robertson begins his RAF training during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. As he learns his trade\, he’s soon rubbing shoulders with Fighter Command heroes. Amongst these are Brian Kingcome\, ‘Ginger’ Lacey and Bob Stanford Tuck. \nMoving from 111 to 72 Squadron\, he opens his account against the Luftwaffe in the spring of 1942. Six months later the action moves to North Africa\, where he adds further to his score. But it’s here that tragedy strikes. He’s shot down by Erich Rudorffer\, one of the Luftwaffe’s most celebrated Experten\, who ended the war with over 200 victories. Despite his wounds\, and barely able to see\, Robbie somehow survives his Spitfire’s crash-landing. \nFound lying near the wreckage by an Army patrol\, he moves from casualty clearing stations to hospitals across Tunisia and Algeria as doctors try desperately to save his sight. Finally\, unable to stand the pain any longer\, he reluctantly agrees to the removal of his right eye. A slow recovery and eventual return home is no compensation for the end of his flying career. \nDesk-bound for the remainder of the war\, the second\, more poignant phase of his RAF life begins. The young schoolgirl\, Connie Freeman\, with whom he’s been in regular correspondence since her evacuation\, becomes his wife. \nIt’s literally hundreds of Robbie’s letters that form the basis of this powerful and moving story. Together with his own and Connie’s diaries\, correspondence from RAF colleagues and his flying logbook\, they bring a unique authenticity to this highly-charged tale. \n‘Black’ Robertson joined the RAF in 1963\, instantly acquiring the nickname that’s remained with him ever since. After 3 years at the RAF College\, Cranwell\, he spent the next 33 in flying\, staff and command appointments including tours of duty in the USA\, Germany and the Falkands. He flew all the RAF’s front line fast jet aircraft and also qualified as a helicopter pilot. After retiring he spent some 5 years with BAE Systems before establishing his own consultancy. A past Clerk to The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire\, he’s a trustee of the David Vaisey Library Prize and a Cranfield Trust mentor. DESCRIPTION:Event sold out\nJoin us for our Friday Morning Talk\, when speaking with Gary Italiaander\, 98 year old Monty will share his incredible experiences as a navigator within the Royal Air Force during multiple Bomber Command missions.  \nMonty is one of life’s heroes. \nHe didn’t have any intention of that being the case. In fact\, he had just started out into the world of accountancy at a time when war was looming. Up to then\, Monty was\, like many young men of the time\, unworldly. Whatever made him decide to enrol in the RAF when his only mode of transport up to then was a bicycle? He didn’t even think he had a chance of getting accepted\, but things in life just happen\, exactly as they did to him. \nOnce Monty was accepted into the RAF\, he felt that the best position for him personally would be as a navigator. \nThe reality was\, once you started flying wartime missions\, if you managed to survive around 6 to 8 missions you were doing very well. However\, Monty survived 32 such missions flying in Halifax bombers and\, in his words\, “never even had so much as a scratch”. \nWhich is probably why\, for many years after the war he was reticent to fly in case his luck ran out! \nAs he approaches the age of 99\, we are delighted that he is willing to tell his remarkable story\, and share his contribution in defeating Nazi Germany. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nThis event is now fully booked. Soane’s additions to Bentley Priory include the stained glass windows in the Reception Hall and the spectacular Rotunda. \nFrom son of a bricklayer to friend of the King\, learn about the extraordinary life of Sir John Soane – architect\, collector\, and curator – and the legacy he left behind in his home and museum. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday Morning Talk\, when we will be joined by Alan Matlock\, Chair of The Spitfire Makers Charitable Trust www.spitfiremakers.org.uk \nIn the summer of 1940\, with the Battle of Britain being fought out over the summer skies of southern England\, the Luftwaffe switched tactics from attacking the RAF and their airfields and targeted the aircraft factories. \nAfter three attempts the Supermarine factories on the banks of the Itchen were finally put out of action in late September 1940. A plan to move production of RJ Mitchell’s iconic fighter from the Woolston and Itchen Works had already been begun some months before but now a complete dispersal was ordered by Churchill’s Minister of Aircraft Production\, Lord Beaverbrook. \nThis talk will tell the human story of those attacks from the point of view of those in the buildings or watching from across the town at the time. The Aviatrix Project aims are to work closely with primary and secondary schools as well as higher education institutions to encourage girls into STEM and enthuse them about aviation. We create opportunities for commercial and private pilots\, engineers and other aviation professionals to visit schools to deliver assemblies and workshops linked to the curriculum. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for a new Online Talk and discover the history of Bomber Command and its role during the Battle of Britain!\n\nIn this talk\, Dave Gilbert will describe the task of gathering the names of the 58\,500 losses that are inscribed on the memorial walls at the International Bomber Command Centre\, and then contrast the role of Bomber Command with that of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. \nBy Dave Gilbert\, Losses Archivist & Trustee \nAbout Dave Gilbert \nDave Gilbert is an electronic engineer by profession\, having studied at Sheffield University. He owns a company that manufactures assistive technology devices for the disabled. When not engrossed in that\, he is the Losses Archivist at the International Bomber Command Centre\, Lincoln and has recently become a Trustee. His role is to compile\, maintain and expand the losses database which forms the basis of the memorial walls and currently contains more than four million pieces of data on 58\,500 airmen. \nNone of his family served with Bomber Command\, his father being marginally too young even by the end of the war to have been considered for aircrew. Perhaps it is the fact that\, mercifully\, none of his relatives are listed amongst the losses that provides the motivation to spend time studying those who sadly are. Or maybe it’s just because he was born and raised in ‘Bomber County’ and lives between two former Bomber Command stations. Either way\, he has spent over 9\,000 voluntary hours working on the project and describes it as his most significant piece of work.
