SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talks: PAFMC 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Commemorative Film - With Richard Kornicki
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday morning talk\, where we will be showing the Polish Air Force Memorial Committee’s 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Commemorative Film. \nChairman of the PAFMC Richard Kornicki\, returns following his well attended and successful talk in September on the Polish Air Force in the West. Richard\, Son of the late gen. bryg. Franciszek Kornicki who flew in the battle with the legendary Polish 303 Squadron\, will introduce the film and take questions afterwards. \nThe film was produced to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Covid prevented the annual Commemoration of the Polish Air Force in 2020\, so this filmed virtual Commemoration was produced in its stead and to stand as a permanent record. The film includes unique footage of the RAF Northolt Sector Control room\, fully staffed by re-enactors\, bringing back to life the operations of 15 Sept 1940. Tributes are paid by the Chief of the Air Staff and the Mayor of Hillingdon\, and Polish folk singers add their own poignant tribute. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talk: A Spitfire Named Connie - with Air Marshal (Retd) 'Black' Robertson CBE
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday Morning Talk\, when we will happily once again be joined by ‘Black’ to talk about the story behind his latest book\, ‘A Spitfire Named Connie’. \nAir Marshal ‘Black’ Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA RAF (Retd) \nA Spitfire Named Connie is an exciting\, rollercoaster of a story. ‘Robbie’ Robertson begins his RAF training during the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. As he learns his trade\, he’s soon rubbing shoulders with Fighter Command heroes. Amongst these are Brian Kingcome\, ‘Ginger’ Lacey and Bob Stanford Tuck. \nMoving from 111 to 72 Squadron\, he opens his account against the Luftwaffe in the spring of 1942. Six months later the action moves to North Africa\, where he adds further to his score. But it’s here that tragedy strikes. He’s shot down by Erich Rudorffer\, one of the Luftwaffe’s most celebrated Experten\, who ended the war with over 200 victories. Despite his wounds\, and barely able to see\, Robbie somehow survives his Spitfire’s crash-landing. \nFound lying near the wreckage by an Army patrol\, he moves from casualty clearing stations to hospitals across Tunisia and Algeria as doctors try desperately to save his sight. Finally\, unable to stand the pain any longer\, he reluctantly agrees to the removal of his right eye. A slow recovery and eventual return home is no compensation for the end of his flying career. \nDesk-bound for the remainder of the war\, the second\, more poignant phase of his RAF life begins. The young schoolgirl\, Connie Freeman\, with whom he’s been in regular correspondence since her evacuation\, becomes his wife. \nIt’s literally hundreds of Robbie’s letters that form the basis of this powerful and moving story. Together with his own and Connie’s diaries\, correspondence from RAF colleagues and his flying logbook\, they bring a unique authenticity to this highly-charged tale. \n‘Black’ Robertson joined the RAF in 1963\, instantly acquiring the nickname that’s remained with him ever since. After 3 years at the RAF College\, Cranwell\, he spent the next 33 in flying\, staff and command appointments including tours of duty in the USA\, Germany and the Falkands. He flew all the RAF’s front line fast jet aircraft and also qualified as a helicopter pilot. After retiring he spent some 5 years with BAE Systems before establishing his own consultancy. A past Clerk to The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire\, he’s a trustee of the David Vaisey Library Prize and a Cranfield Trust mentor. His time is now devoted mainly to lecturing and writing: www.blackrobertson.com. \n  \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talk: Monty Felton DFC - In person with Gary Italiaander - EVENT SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Event sold out\nJoin us for our Friday Morning Talk\, when speaking with Gary Italiaander\, 98 year old Monty will share his incredible experiences as a navigator within the Royal Air Force during multiple Bomber Command missions.  \nMonty is one of life’s heroes. \nHe didn’t have any intention of that being the case. In fact\, he had just started out into the world of accountancy at a time when war was looming. Up to then\, Monty was\, like many young men of the time\, unworldly. Whatever made him decide to enrol in the RAF when his only mode of transport up to then was a bicycle? He didn’t even think he had a chance of getting accepted\, but things in life just happen\, exactly as they did to him. \nOnce Monty was accepted into the RAF\, he felt that the best position for him personally would be as a navigator. \nThe reality was\, once you started flying wartime missions\, if you managed to survive around 6 to 8 missions you were doing very well. However\, Monty survived 32 such missions flying in Halifax bombers and\, in his words\, “never even had so much as a scratch”. \nWhich is probably why\, for many years after the war he was reticent to fly in case his luck ran out! \nAs he approaches the age of 99\, we are delighted that he is willing to tell his remarkable story\, and share his contribution in defeating Nazi Germany. \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nThis event is now fully booked. If you would like to join the reserve list for tickets should they become available\, please email enquiries@bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk with your contact details and the number of tickets required. Alternatively please call us on 020 8950 5526.

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talk: Reflections on the Battle of Britain - with Air Marshal (Retd) ‘Black’ Robertson CBE
DESCRIPTION:After his well-received talk in November last\, Air Marshal Black Robertson\, author of the Fighters in the Blood and A Spitfire Named Connie\, is paying a welcome return visit to the Museum. This time he’ll be reflecting on lesser known aspects of the Battle of Britain\, in particular those individuals and organisations whose largely unheralded contributions helped ensure the nation’s survival. Above all it’s a story about people\, those who in the summer of 1940 helped turn the tide of events. The Air Marshal’s father\, a decorated Spitfire ace\, was in training at the time but later flew with veterans of the conflict\, giving rise to a fund of related stories. It promises to be a fascinating talk. \nAir Marshal Black Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA RAF (Retd) \n‘Black’ Robertson joined the RAF in 1963\, instantly acquiring the nickname that’s remained with him ever since. SUMMARY:Friday Morning Talk: Building Spitfires Without A Factory
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Friday Morning Talk\, when we will be joined by Alan Matlock\, Chair of The Spitfire Makers Charitable Trust www.spitfiremakers.org.uk \nIn the summer of 1940\, with the Battle of Britain being fought out over the summer skies of southern England\, the Luftwaffe switched tactics from attacking the RAF and their airfields and targeted the aircraft factories. \nAfter three attempts the Supermarine factories on the banks of the Itchen were finally put out of action in late September 1940. A plan to move production of RJ Mitchell’s iconic fighter from the Woolston and Itchen Works had already been begun some months before but now a complete dispersal was ordered by Churchill’s Minister of Aircraft Production\, Lord Beaverbrook. \nThis talk will tell the human story of those attacks from the point of view of those in the buildings or watching from across the town at the time. Some of these are first-hand accounts have been recorded or collected by the speaker himself and will be illustrated with period costume and sound effects! \nThis talk will take place onsite in the Museum’s Learning Centre and is included in Museum admission or Annual Membership. \nAdvance booking required – please reserve your seat via the link below. \nReserve Your Place

SUMMARY:Online Talk: The IBCC Losses Project & Bomber Command's Role in the Battle of Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for a new Online Talk and discover the history of Bomber Command and its role during the Battle of Britain!\n\nIn this talk\, Dave Gilbert will describe the task of gathering the names of the 58\,500 losses that are inscribed on the memorial walls at the International Bomber Command Centre\, and then contrast the role of Bomber Command with that of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. \nBy Dave Gilbert\, Losses Archivist & Trustee \nAbout Dave Gilbert \nDave Gilbert is an electronic engineer by profession\, having studied at Sheffield University. He owns a company that manufactures assistive technology devices for the disabled. When not engrossed in that\, he is the Losses Archivist at the International Bomber Command Centre\, Lincoln and has recently become a Trustee. His role is to compile\, maintain and expand the losses database which forms the basis of the memorial walls and currently contains more than four million pieces of data on 58\,500 airmen. \nNone of his family served with Bomber Command\, his father being marginally too young even by the end of the war to have been considered for aircrew. Perhaps it is the fact that\, mercifully\, none of his relatives are listed amongst the losses that provides the motivation to spend time studying those who sadly are. Or maybe it’s just because he was born and raised in ‘Bomber County’ and lives between two former Bomber Command stations. Either way\, he has spent over 9\,000 voluntary hours working on the project and describes it as his most significant piece of work. He is married with two adult children. \nJoining the Talk \nThe talk will be held online on Zoom at 11am on Friday 10th December. Limited places are available. \nNon-Annual Member Tickets: £4\nAnnual Member Tickets: Free \nBook your ticket online here. SUMMARY:Online Talk: The Wreck Hunter: Battle of Britain & the Blitz
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for a new Online Talk and discover the world of Battle of Britain archaeology!\n\nAs a boy living near RAF Fighter Command’s famous Biggin Hill airfield in 1940 Terry Parsons had a death-defying encounter with a hail of bullets from a low flying Dornier 17. It was this haunting experience that led him as a young man in the 1960s to begin a lifetime’s search for forgotten Spitfires\, Hurricanes\, Defiants\, Beaufighters\, Me109s\, Dorniers and Heinkels which had fallen from the skies. \nNow regarded as a pioneer in the field of aviation archaeology Terry has dug more than 900 RAF and Luftwaffe aircraft from the countryside and back gardens of southern England. \nThis illustrated talk about his inspiring and dedicated work in honour of ‘The Few’ and ‘The Many’ is presented by Melody Foreman MCIJ – author of ‘The Wreck Hunter’ – Terry’s compelling and heart-felt story of discovery and revelation. \nThe audience will learn how artefacts recovered from crash sites are major historical and significant reminders of an airborne conflict easily on a scale of importance as Trafalgar or Waterloo. For example we find out how a bent machine gun from the wreck of Oblt Lt Ulrich Steinhilper’s Me109\, a piece of shattered perspex from Pilot Officer George Corbett’s Spitfire\, or even a shoe once belonging to Polish fighter ace Marian Pisarek found in a crumpled Hurricane cockpit\, all offer us striking evidence of the personal and most significant stories of the aircrews of 1940. \nLoaded with social history\, compelling stories\, and full of rare and exclusive interviews with the families of the pilots\, the talk will also include tales of the heartening times when several members of ‘The Few’ joined Terry on a dig to help find the Spitfire or Hurricane they had perilously baled out of during the heat of the Battle. Among them were the awesome and much missed Squadron Leader Tony Pickering and Group Captain Tom Gleave CBE – archivist of the Battle of Britain Memorial and founding member of The Guinea Pig Club. \nBy Melody Foreman \nJoining the Talk \nThe talk will be held online on Zoom at 11am on Friday 25th June. SUMMARY:Online Talk: Operation Black Buck 1
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for a new Online Talk and discover the story of the Vulcan raids during the Falklands War!\nThis talk will be presented by Sqn Ldr Bob Tuxford AFC and is available to join FREE through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.\n\n\n\nBlack Buck was the code name given to the Vulcan raids against Port Stanley Airfield in East Falkland Island. Flown on the night of 30th April/1st May 1982\, Black Buck 1 was the first of seven planned Vulcan raids\, and established a record in the history books at the time of the longest bombing mission in the history of air warfare. \nThe airfield was occupied by the Argentine Military in early April 1982\, and the RAF’s task was to bomb the runway and deny its use to the enemy fast jets on the Falklands\, and hamper the resupply of the invasion forces. \n  \nThe Vulcan bomber would need to be refuelled eight times by an outbound wave of 11 Victor K2 tankers to reach the target some 3600nm from Ascension Is. A further 7 Victors would be required to ensure the safe recovery of the bomber post strike. \nThe enormity of the task\, and the air-to-air refuelling support required with an unfamiliar receiver led to many difficulties and changes to the original refuelling plan. \nBy Sqn Ldr Bob Tuxford AFC RAF Ret’d \n \n\n \nAbout the Speaker \nBob Tuxford graduated from the RAF College Cranwell in 1970. His first operational tour was on No 214 Sqn on the Victor K1 three-point tanker in the air-to-air refuelling role. \nFollowing tours in the USA and UK\, flying the Victor K2 in support of the South Atlantic Operations during the Falklands War\, he participated in the iconic first ‘Black Buck’ mission for which he was awarded the Air Force Cross for gallantry. \nOn leaving the RAF in 1987\, Bob flew as a commercial pilot for Monarch Airlines\, retiring in 2010 with close on 19\,000 hours and 70+ types in his logbook. \nIn his spare time when not playing golf\, he re-acquainted himself with Victor K2 XM715\, and became one of its taxy pilots at the Bruntingthorpe Cold War Jet collection. Bob has also found time to write a book of his flying experiences ‘CONTACT!”\, which chronicles his 20-year diverse flying career within the Royal Air Force. \nJoining the Talk \nThe talk will be held online on Zoom at 11am on Friday 28th May. Limited places are available. \nBook your free ticket online here.
